We don't have a flue, what are our options for a gas fire?
If you have a suitable fireplace and a suitable outside wall, there are several options:
We don't have a flue or a suitable outside wall, what options for a gas fire do we have?
If your room is at least 23m square you can fit a flueless fire (air vent required) or a flueless stove (air vent required) if your room is at least 40m square, for example, see Burley, Esse, Acquisitions. Flueless fires work by using a catalytic converter to convert the carbon monoxide into harmless carbon dioxide and water vapor. This technology has been in the USA & Canada for many years. Flueless fires are classed as 100% efficient as in all the gas going into the fire comes back out to heat the room.
We have a precast/Class2flue, what gas fires can we have?
If you have a suitable fireplace with a suitable opening (22x16) you will probably be able to have an outset fire (eg Flavel Emberglow) or a slimline open living flame (e.g. Kinder Nevada, Legend Spirit Superslim). However if you can create enough depth i.e. a mantle with a 3" rebate then you should be able to fit a deeper fire (e.g. Brilliant Innovation, Legend Spirit, Kinder Kalahari or Camber). Gazco Logic is also a deep class 2 fire.
YOU MUST CHECK WITH INSTALLER FOR SUITABILITY FOR ANY FIRE.
PLEASE NOTE - Many precast flues (mainly built in the 70's +80's) will need their flue "updating" to comply with current regulations. A new flue terminal may be required and a new starter block. Advice:- Consult with a specialist!
NB If you have an outside wall you can have a balanced flue fire or even a wood burning stove with a flue system, please speak to us.
I need a hot fire, what do you recommend?
CLASS 1 FLUE: The latest fires on the market are glass fronted high efficiency fires, up to 4.6kw of heat output and 89% efficiency. There are also new improved high efficiency open fronted fires, up to 4.7kw of heat output and 74% efficiency.
CLASS 2 FLUE: There are similar fires for class 2 flues however the output and efficiency will be slightly less.
STOVES are hot and efficient and enviromentally friendly. They can be installed in many different situations and have a vast design range to suit all tastes. we sell stoves up to 14kw!
What is a convector fire and do I need one ?
A convector fire is a fire which not only gives out radiant heat but also convected heat. It is also more efficient. Any fire should be a back-up to central heating but, for maximum heat we recommend a convector fire or more specifically a glass fronted fire.
I have a class one flue, do I need a flue liner?
Some glass-fronted fires and most gas stoves require a new flue liner fitting. Also, if you have an old chimney you may need one. It is a CONDITION from manufacturers to have your chimney swept prior to a gas fire being fitted.
ADVICE: Have your chimney swept and tested by a local chimney sweep (they should be GasSafe Registered) then you will know what condition your flue is in.
FOOTNOTE: A flue liner has a life span of 8/10 years so when a new fire is installed a new liner is required.
STOVES It is highly recommended that a solid fuel flue liner is fitted with a wood burning or multi fuel stove. It makes the stove more efficient and perform better and more importantly it is safer, greatly reducing the risk of chimney fires.
